Those dark streaks are not dirt. They are a living algae (Gloeocapsa magma) that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and spreads on the shaded north and east slopes. Moss and lichen follow, lifting shingle edges.
High pressure strips the protective granules off shingles. Our soft wash uses low pressure and lets the solution kill the growth at the root: the streaks go on the day, and the rest sheds over the following weeks. Cedar shake and slate get the same gentle method - nothing abrasive touches a surface nobody can put back.

A soft wash rinses the roof's algae and debris over the siding, soffits, fascia and gutters, which is why the shingle manufacturers' own association says to keep the solution off the rest of the building. And no house is clean: even a year-old home holds pollen, film and spider work. Wash the roof alone and the walls below read dirty by comparison. When is the best time to clean a roof for optimal maintenance?
It's best to clean your roof annually. We service roofs throughout our washing season, which spans March through November, and the shaded north and east slopes are the first to show algae again. Most roofs are booked with a house wash in the same visit, anywhere we work.
Will you pressure wash my shingles?
No. We never pressure wash shingles. High-pressure water strips the protective granules off asphalt shingles and can drive water under them. Our soft wash uses low pressure, about what a garden hose delivers. Real pressure is for concrete and pavers and for pool decks and patios.
How often should a roof be cleaned in Northeast Ohio?
Once a year. Algae comes back from spores in the air, so annual roof cleaning during our March-through-November season keeps a roof streak-free year after year.
How is a roof wash quoted?
By the roof area and the covering - asphalt shingle, cedar shake or slate - never by pressure, because we do not use any on a roof. Most roofs are quoted the same day from property imagery, and most are booked with a house wash on the same visit, which comes back as one quote rather than two.
