Restore the Beauty of Your Sandstone

Sandstone is everywhere in the older neighborhoods around Chagrin Falls - garden steps, retaining walls, patios and the foundations of century homes. Much of it is Berea sandstone: light grey-to-buff, porous, and one of the softest stones you can build with. Within a few seasons it turns green with algae and black with lichen, and high pressure takes the face off the stone along with the growth, leaving it to stain even faster.

A soft wash works the other way around. A low-pressure application of eco-friendly cleaning agents kills the algae, moss and lichen in the pores and rinses them out, unveiling the stone's natural color while maintaining its structural integrity.

FAQs

Sandstone Restoration FAQ

Why not pressure wash sandstone?

Sandstone is one of the softest stones you can build with. Hit it with high pressure and you take the face of the stone off along with the growth, leaving a pitted, sandy surface that stains even faster. A soft wash kills the algae, moss and lichen in the pores of the stone and rinses them out at low pressure instead - the same method we use on siding and roofs.

What does the sandstone look like afterward?

The original color of the stone, from warm tan to grey, with its surface intact. The black staining lifts out and the natural color comes back. Send a photo of the stone and we will tell you what to expect.

Is Berea sandstone common around Chagrin Falls?

Yes. Much of the stone in older neighborhoods here is Berea sandstone, quarried around Berea southwest of Cleveland from the 1830s and laid across the region as building stone and flagstone. See recent stone restorations.

How is sandstone work quoted?

By the stone area and its condition. Send a photo of the stone with the address and we will tell you what to expect before you see a quote - including any staining that will lighten rather than come all the way back. That is said up front, not discovered on the day.
